Top things to do this weekend, July 25-27

The best party of the year is happening now. The 12-day Ohio State Fair fair exhibits much of the best Ohio has to offer: youngsters with livestock, vegetable carvers, butter sculptures, rides and probably a few places to eat unhealthy - but tasty - food. Music acts this weekend include the Ohio State University Marching Band paired with the Columbus Symphony; Lady Antebellum; Dr. John; Bachman & Turner; Blue Oyster Cult; Foghat; Michael Buble; and Scotty McCreery. A Serbian festival offers something different, as do events where you wade in creeks.

Downtown Parking Lots to Receive Public Art Upgrades

Columbus is filling in surface lots with new development, consolidating parking spaces in to garage structures, and supplementing with transit and service-sharing improvements — but there’s still a large sea of asphalt throughout the urban core that likely isn’t going to disappear as rapidly as most people would like. And that’s why Bold Booths is here to help.

Bold Booths is the name of a new public art installation that combines the functionality of parking lot booth buildings with the aesthetic contribution of an interesting visual enhancement to an otherwise bleak hardscape.

June Construction Round Up

Summer has arrived, and the City of Columbus rapidly continues to transform with the addition of many new residents, businesses, infrastructure projects and other developments throughout the city. While some of those projects are being completed, others have just gotten started.  What that means is a lot of construction cranes are still dotting the landscape as new buildings grow upward in nearly every urban neighborhood throughout Columbus.

Kick the Starbucks Addiction With Local Coffee Drinks

If you haven’t already heard, Starbucks announced last week that they would be raising prices on many of their coffee drinks. The increase is somewhat incremental, ranging from five cents to 20 cents depending upon the drink. If you consider yourself a Starbucks addict, and have a specific favorite drink that you’re willing to stand in line for there, then perhaps now is as good a time as any to make the switch to something local before the price increase takes effect.

Tiny Doors Lead to a World of Imagination

Have you found one? I know it’s always been my dream to do this kind of thing, afterall, I’ve been enchanted with the world of elves and fairies since childhood. Aren’t a lot of kids? …and adults?
This summer, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is participating in the second year of Keebler’s Tiny Door Project, an idea and grassroots marketing effort supported by Keebler and City Enventions. The doors are meant to inspire imaginations in children and adults, get people out to explore their city parks, and to bring a little whimsy into everyone’s lives.
