LEGO display of Columbus includes quirky buildings

When building a replica of Columbus using LEGO bricks, everyone expects to see the Ohio Statehouse and familiar skyscrapers.

But look closely at the massive Central Ohio LEGO Train Club’s display at the Columbus Museum of Art, and you'll see some surprises.

Among the hundreds of buildings and thousands of detailed pieces, who would expect the E.T. Paul tire company building on Parsons Avenue? Or the Beer Barn on N. Fourth Street?

‘Friendsgiving’ offers chance for groups to feast and count blessings together

What if you could have a heaping helping of Thanksgiving dinner without a side of family drama?
You can at a Friendsgiving, an informal (usually wine- or whiskey-fueled) gathering popular among 20- and 30-somethings at this time of year.

Next Level Skate Shop Opening in Clintonville

Mack Schneider has spent a lot of time on skates. First on ice skates as a kid, later as a college athlete on the Ohio State Women’s Club Hockey team, and most recently on roller skates as “The Smacktivist”, a competitor and trainer with the Ohio Roller Girls flat-track roller derby team.
The next step for Schneider begins on November 29th with the grand opening of the Next Level Skate Shop, located at 4410 Indianola Avenue, just south of Morse Road. The decision to open the store was one of pure commitment to the sport.

Olde Towne East re-emerges as 'a cool place to be'

“I can’t think of any other area of Columbus that has gone through the ups and downs and fits and starts and has such a wide range of housing prices,” said Bill Uttley, a veteran central Ohio appraiser who owns Columbus Appraisal and Consulting.
With its proximity to Downtown and housing stock that rivals Victorian Village, Olde Towne East has been touted as the up-and-coming neighborhood for years.

Be My Neighbor – Colonial Hills Edition

Colonial Hills in Worthington is a neighborhood that I’d call a hidden treasure, located on the south edge where Worthington meets Clintonville and flanked by the Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian-inspired Rush Creek (many aren’t familiar with this tiny community but should check it out if interested in architecture).

Horse riding instills confidence in Area Special Needs Children

Willow Ridge Therapeutic Riding Facility is a nonprofit equine establishment in Plain City for young people with special needs.
Horses, as Willow Ridge founder Pam Bosch knows, have special powers: a calming presence; a means for improving balance, posture and core strength; a way to draw quiet children out of their shells.
And, with the guidance of teachers, the facility offers a haven for youngsters who might have limited exposure to animals or lack the means to pursue outdoor hobbies independently.

City plans bike trail hub for West Side

Chris Haydocy looks at the West Side and sees a future in which young people are buying houses and businesses and returning to long-shuttered vacant properties.
The catalyst for that resurgence, the auto dealer says, is what he hopes will be the “crown jewel” of a 330-mile bike trail between Cincinnati and Cleveland.

When a Community College Transforms a City

You might think that in a city that is host to a true educational colossus—The Ohio State University, the third-largest public university in the country with over 57,000 students—the president of the local community college would have a hard time having much impact. Not so.
For one thing, CSCC is no ordinary community college. It’s a goliath in its own right—a 25,000-student institution that can't help but make waves in this city when it does things. And David Harrison, dynamic and skillful though he may be, has had a lot of help. He has a hard-charging staff of very capable people. And in a city where “collaboration” isn’t just a buzzword but seems to be a principle that people live by, Harrison has received a helping hand from many others, including business leaders and the Mayor. The results add up to a story about how this community college and its allies are giving Columbus and the central-Ohio region a vital boost.
