Festivals feature dancers, old-time baseball, yummy food

Traditionally, Labor Day weekend is jampacked with some of the most popular and interesting events of the season.
Although they’ve been around awhile — one event is in its 122nd year — several festivals have added fresh twists to the traditional offerings, ranging from new menu items to quirky events and innovative ways to tap into the competitive spirit.

Housing Trends: Sprawl or Not ?

Let’s not pronounce sprawl dead just yet.  Compared at least to the last five years, things might even get a little worse before they get better.  But the resurgence in strong- and (in some cases) mid-market city living is real, and downtown living, working, and shopping displaces what would otherwise be sprawl.

With few ways to go afoul, birdbaths add splash to yard

If you tend a garden, you have no doubt noticed that it attracts birds.
Every garden — big or small, flowers or vegetables — offers seeds or bugs to eat, along with places to hide or perch.
To make your garden even more inviting, consider adding a birdbath.
You’ll please visitors of both avian and human persuasions.

Review: PULL LEFT at the OSU Urban Arts Space

PULL LEFT, the current exhibition on view at The Ohio State University’s Urban Arts Space, proves this point in a most compelling way. The show features works by a emerging contemporary Chinese artists who are beginning to make their mark on the global stage. Perhaps, more importantly it is a show that offers viewers here in the United States the chance to experience the world from a wholly new perspective.

Open Streets Columbus: Installment One – Rich Street

Streets used to be gathering places. They used to be places where both adults and kids would congregate. The adults would socialize and the kids would play. Now, playgrounds are built far away from streets and usually protected by some sort of fencing or barrier. Meanwhile, pedestrians have been herded up to signalized intersections in order to cross safely. Our city streets have been designed with one purpose in mind: to move cars.

Open Streets is a free initiative that temporarily closes streets to autos so that people can bike, skateboard, dance, and more. By removing the daily dangers of motor vehicles, people of all ages, abilities, and ethnic backgrounds can use streets to once again connect with one another and engage in fun, physical activities.

The renewed interest in public transit ridership is something often discussed on Columbus Underground as a trend for millennials and urban dwellers that continue to relocate to walkable urban neighborhoods where transit systems are easiest to use. Why do my maple leaves have spots?!

Many folks are seeing symptoms of a fungal disease known as tar spot. The disease is caused by several fungi in the genus Rhytisma and infects silver, sugar, red and Norway maple as well as their relative, box elder.

A cosmetic problem that typically does not impact tree health.

Soda Time

It all started with cola.
That’s according to John Lynch, the owner (along with his wife Jennifer) of Rambling House Soda Pop on East Hudson Street in the University District. After working in a brewery that also made small-batch soda, he turned his garage into a laboratory and started brewing his own concoctions the same way craft beer is made. The goal was to produce a quality drink with a few ingredients.
