Cheaper to Buy Than to Rent
New research from the real estate website Trulia finds that homeownership is less expensive than renting in all of the country’s 100 largest metropolitan areas. The advantage narrows considerably, however, when the home buyer uses a low-down-payment loan insured by the Federal Housing Administration.

Parables and Politics & Elijah Pierce’s Art
Elijah Pierce is one of the best known artists associated with Columbus. His works are held by major collections and his legacy continues to influence artists both locally and beyond. That’s a good thing. He deserves it. There are few artists who’ve had the impact and influence that Pierce has. The downside to all this notoriety is the tendency to take him for granted; to pigeon-hole him, to think about him in two-dimensional, short-hand descriptors: “Elijah Pierce? Oh yeah, woodcarver, folk artist. Had a barber shop on the east side. Real salt of the earth guy. Religious too, right?”

Growing Roses in Ohio
After you Realtor has found that perfect house (see www.ColumbusIsHome.com) You need flowers. Roses are perfect but try telling that to the many Ohioans who struggle daily with their roses, pruning and prodding and nitpicking every detail of the delicate, unfolding, softly scented and layered petals.
This author says " “If you can grow a marigold, you can grow a rose”.

RiverSouth is Ideal for Innovation District
As reported, (In Columbus Underground) the research conducted thus far has looked at the possibility of creating an Innovation District in one of three areas: Downtown, The Short North or Franklinton. After spending a week thinking about the possibilities, I’ve come to the personal conclusion that the RiverSouth District in Downtown Columbus is the most ideal place for this initiative to land. That’s not to say that it couldn’t work in other areas, but the Short North is growing short on space, and East Franklinton’s development plan calls for a more robust creative rebirth that doesn’t focus specifically on startups. Here’s why RiverSouth has all the right ingredients for the making of an Innovation District:

100-Year-Old Underground Bowling Alley Reopens Downtown
If you’ve ever walked down the sidewalk on East Broad Street past The Athletic Club of Columbus, then you’ve stood on top of a bowling alley. The five-lane facility was constructed in the basement of the clubhouse back in 1915, and after an 18-month closure for renovations, is ready to reopen again to members of The ACC and their guests.

How to Attract Artists to a Down-and-Out Neighborhood
Early last week, for the American Futures series here at The Atlantic, I posted the first part of my look into the efforts in Columbus, Ohio, to resuscitate the city's oldest and poorest neighborhood, Franklinton. Let's explore this some more.
The revitalization is gaining momentum because of the efforts of the city government, private-sector organizations, and a group of citizens who, through the sustained work of theFranklinton Development Association (FDA), have been working for more than 20 years to figure out how to do it right. The strategy that has gained some real traction is an effort to "rebrand" the eastern part of the area as the "Franklinton Arts District."

An Innovation District would Boost Entrepreneurism in Columbus
The Short North, Franklinton or Downtown could one day be home to an “Innovation District” – a cluster of buildings offering office space, living quarters and complementary businesses that together local leaders hope would provide a boost to the city’s entrepreneurial culture.
People like Sarah-Jane Workman (www.columbusishome.com) plan to be there.

At Home: Wooded Oasis in Columbus
When you are looking to move to a wooded property, your mind probably does not go to the middle of a city, but that is exactly what Eliah Thomas was hoping to find. After selling her 50 acre family farm located in Mechanicsburg, Thomas desired a location closer to the city core, but with the remote feel a wooded area provides.
“I needed a really cool transition,” says Thomas. “I wanted to live in the woods.”

One of Columbus’ most well hidden treasures is about to have a re-launch that should make it as well known locally as it is in cartooning circles. Gallery Hop Celebrates 30th Anniversary
If you want to show off Columbus to visitors from out of town, there’s no better time and place to do it than the first Saturday of the month in The Short North during Gallery Hop. The monthly tradition is one of the most definitive experiences in Columbus where thousands of residents crowd onto the sidewalks to take in the city’s best art, culture, food, shopping and entertainment. And that monthly tradition is celebrating a special milestone on Saturday, October 4th as the event series turns 30 years old.
Gallery Hop wasn’t always as well known as it is today though. In fact, the very first try was basically a failure.
