Ode to the Tuliptree

(Liriodendron tulipifera)

Shakespeare used the term "trippingly" to refer to a lilting or nimble effect as in "trippingly on the tongue" rather than bombastic speechifying referenced in his Hamlet directives.  The Latin name of tuliptree should thusly be spoken trippingly.  Try saying it out loud; it's very elfish and fairy-like trills befits the "trippingly" term the Bard first used in "Midsummer Night's Dream."

Kick-start your spring garden

If you removed cherry blossoms and flowering magnolias from the early April landscape, you’d see that the very start of spring is a pretty empty affair. Yes, the whole plant world is now stirring, but there’s a lot of inertia to overcome, and it will be another couple of weeks or more before we feel we’ve stepped into spring proper.

Dough Mama Opening Bake Shop in Clintonville

Dough Mama was one of the newcomers in our Best Bites: Bakeries event back in February, but that didn’t stop Perrie Wilkof from wowing the crowds with her Maple Bourbon Pecan Mini Pies (voted 3rd favorite dessert that night). In fact, her home-based business has done so well since launching back in September, that she’s already making the next step forward into becoming a brick-and-mortar business in Clintonville.

COTA Approves New Bus Pass Program for Downtown Workforce

There is some progress. A few years ago I was on contract at Ohio Department of Education and wanted the contracting company to buy a bus pass. That was rejected but they paid for a parkind spot at the Leveque Tower for an outrageous amount.

Vive la difference !

Road Map as this community grows by half a million people

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) recently completed a comprehensive redesign of the bus network in Columbus – their Transit System Review recommended more-frequent buses in the urban core and a host of other changes, all without increasing the overall budget. While the new network will be slowly rolled out over the course of the next two years, COTA is now setting its sites on the future - a planning process they are calling COTA NextGen will look to the public for big ideas on how the city’s transportation system should respond to predicted growth and changing demographics.

Ground-Nesting Bees on the Wing

The males have no stinger. The females are too busy working to do much harm, but a  lot of good. They are pollinators- leave them to their assigned tasks.

Leave the bees to their work please

Eat Right: Restaurants Hidden in Neighborhoods

So much of Columbus’ dining scene is centered on High Street, which is neat, but it’s always nice to get off the main drag and stumble upon a spot tucked into an otherwise residential neighborhood. Here are a few favorites around town.

The fix starts not with transit but with pedestrians

"all trips begin and end with a pedestrian trip. If someone’s experience with Columbus is driving in, parking in a garage, taking an elevator to their office, eating in the cafeteria and going home, then Columbus is going to fail. The place to start is with unrelenting quality of the pedestrian experience."

Revised Olympic Plan Reduces Apartment Density, Increases Parking

In August, local developer Kyle Katz announced plans to replace their family-owned property in Clintonville that formerly housed the now-closed Olympic Pool with a four-story 152-unit mixed-use apartment project. The plan faced some neighborhood opposition that thought that the development would cause a negative impact to the area, and it was officially placed “on hold” in October.
Today, Katz has unveiled an updated design for the development, that would reduce the number of apartment units to 115, the amount of commercial retail space from 19,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet and would increase the number of parking spaces to meet 93% of the recommended allotment based on site use.

Apartment Building with Smart Car-Only Parking Pushes the Envelope in Short North

Construction could start as soon as this summer on a unique 32-unit apartment building at 1055 North High Street in the Short North. The building will be six stories tall with retail on the first floor, but it’s the parking garage – featuring spaces about half the normal size – that sets the project apart from any other in Columbus, and maybe even in the country.
