FOR THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN EATING, LOOK TO COLUMBUS

No great rock bands come from Columbus, Ohio, says Cameron Mitchell, the city’s most celebrated restaurateur. Mitchell has built his empire by understanding his hometown’s safe distance from the cutting edge.
"We don’t have any preconceived notions. Maybe if you’re on the coasts you already think you’re cool, you already think you know everything." Mitchell says. "We don’t want to be so avant-garde or so hot that we alienate people. We have to, by our nature, appeal to the masses."

Downtown Bishop’s Walk Condos Selling Quickly

After the Great Recession of 2007-2009, very few for-sale condos have been built in Downtown Columbus or the surrounding urban neighborhoods. Development has certainly bounced back in a big way in recent years, but the overwhelming number of new living spaces are nearly all constructed as for-rent apartment units.
That means that the second phase of Bishop’s Walk at Neighborhood Launch is a bit of an outlier with 26 new for-sale units currently under construction on Gay Street. With all previous condo units having entirely sold out, the Edwards Companies felt confident enough to move forward with new for-sale product, and the response so far has been great for the developer.

Makeover Planned for Parsons Avenue in Olde Towne East

The small stretch of Parsons Avenue that runs along the western edge of Olde Towne East has always been a hotspot of activity for the neighborhood. Home to numerous restaurants, bars, shops and businesses, Parsons Avenue is the default place to go for an art gallery exhibition, a haircut, or a cup of coffee.
The City of Columbus has plans to further enhance the area with a new program that will upgrade the infrastructure, the environment and update it with a public art component as well.

Copenhagen Lighting the Way to Greener, More Efficient Cities

COPENHAGEN — On a busy road in the center of town here, a string of green lights embedded in the bike path — the “Green Wave” — flashes on, helping cyclists avoid red traffic lights.
On a main artery into the city, truck drivers can see on smartphones when the next light will change. And in a nearby suburb, new LED streetlights brighten only as vehicles approach, dimming once they pass.

Columbus Pride !

Ohio has the most people with state pride, according to a Movoto Real Estate ranking published July 22nd. While judged merely through Facebook likes in an unofficial study, with the abundance of Ohio-proud T-shirts in Columbus alone, this came as no surprise to many Ohioans.
These seven Columbus-based independent labels show us how their Ohio-made tees represent their love for the state and beyond:

Columbus Stories: Young Art Collectors. Stephanie Rond and Nate Oliver

Stepping into the home of Stephanie Rond and Nate Oliver is like stepping into an art gallery. A beautifully curated one, of course. Which is no surprise, since curating art is one of Rond’s professions. Their displays rotate through over 150 pieces.

“We’re still actively collecting,” says Rond. “We have had to put some in storage.”
