The five-story building with apartments and stores proposed for the heart of Clintonville is growing.
Northstar Realty is in contract to acquire the former Clintonville Electric site, giving the company control of the west side of N. High Street between W. North Broadway and Brighton Road. Although they are aging, the Baby Boomers are not going away quietly.

City of Columbus Announces Plans to Plant 300,000 New Trees by 2020

When it comes to urban revitalization, there are many different ways to go about building (or rebuilding) a community. Nearly every idea comes with its share of proponents and detractors, with some ideas being more controversial than others. But there’s one form of community enhancement that few people would argue is problematic for a neighborhood: planting trees.

Tree Leaves Dropping Early Means...What?

The calls have begun to come into the Extension offices from concerned citizens, regarding their trees which are dropping leaves.  Most of the concerns for the trees center on these leaf losses and whether or not the trees are dying.  While there is no direct correlation between early leaf loss or coloration and tree death, it may suggest that there are stress factors which are impacting that tree.

Pollinators in the Garden

June 15 - 21, 2015 has been designated National Pollinator Week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; this is a great time to think about how to attract more pollinators to our gardens.  Pollinators are necessary for the production of many food crops and provide a vital service to the survival of many native plants.  We can thank pollinators for one in three mouthfuls of food and drink – from coffee and chocolate to most fruits and many vegetables we eat.  Choosing plants that provide the necessary habitat and food sources for birds, bats, butterflies, moths, beetles, wasps, small mammals and most importantly bees can increase the number of pollinators in your garden.

Ode to the Tuliptree

(Liriodendron tulipifera)

Shakespeare used the term "trippingly" to refer to a lilting or nimble effect as in "trippingly on the tongue" rather than bombastic speechifying referenced in his Hamlet directives.  The Latin name of tuliptree should thusly be spoken trippingly.  Try saying it out loud; it's very elfish and fairy-like trills befits the "trippingly" term the Bard first used in "Midsummer Night's Dream."

Kick-start your spring garden

If you removed cherry blossoms and flowering magnolias from the early April landscape, you’d see that the very start of spring is a pretty empty affair. Yes, the whole plant world is now stirring, but there’s a lot of inertia to overcome, and it will be another couple of weeks or more before we feel we’ve stepped into spring proper.

Road Map as this community grows by half a million people

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) recently completed a comprehensive redesign of the bus network in Columbus – their Transit System Review recommended more-frequent buses in the urban core and a host of other changes, all without increasing the overall budget. While the new network will be slowly rolled out over the course of the next two years, COTA is now setting its sites on the future - a planning process they are calling COTA NextGen will look to the public for big ideas on how the city’s transportation system should respond to predicted growth and changing demographics.
