Columbus City Councilmembers Prepare and Deliver Meals on Wheels
As part of Columbus City Council’s continuing efforts to provide a safe, high quality of life for every resident, President Pro Tem Priscilla Tyson and Councilmembers Elizabeth Brown, Shannon Hardin and Michael Stinziano will help prepare and deliver meals for the Meals-on-Wheels program.
“LifeCare Alliance and Meals on Wheels provide a critical service to Columbus' older adults,” said Stinziano. “I am very supportive of the efforts to bring awareness to a program that not only provides nutritious meals but also continues to advocate for the health and safety of our older adult population in neighborhoods across Columbus.”
Meals-on-Wheels provides nourishing food and a daily visit to homebound older adults and individuals living with a medical challenge and/or disability 365 days a year. Meal options include hot, cold, frozen, specialty diet, kosher, vegetarian, pureed and mechanical soft.
Councilmembers are working with LifeCare Alliance to help spread awareness of the March for Meals campaign by participating during in the “Community Champions’ Week,” March 21-24.
“March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March initiated by Meals On Wheels America (MOWA), to raise awareness about senior hunger and encourage action on the part of the local elected officials in our community,” said Chuck Gehring, President and CEO of LifeCare Alliance.
The Meals-on-Wheels program delivers approximately 5,000 meals a day. In 2016, volunteers and staff delivered 850,073 meals to 5,000 clients in Franklin, Madison, Marion, Champaign and Logan Counties. In 2016 alone, more than 5,000 Meals-on-Wheels volunteers logged 357,626 miles and 101,289 hours of service.
“The home-delivered meals and human contact we provide 365 days per year to the older adults, medically challenged, and disable residents in our community are needed now more than ever. We asked the local elected officials to support March for Meals campaign, and they never let our clients down. We appreciate the support,” Gehring continued.
